Eshowe Birding and Botanical Weekend 2007

From the 18th - 21st October 2007.

Eshowe - the only town in the Republic, which completely surrounds an indigenous forest.

Your hosts, the Eshowe Farming Community and Bird Club, look forward to meeting you, sharing their heritage, and interacting socially with you.

Birding Weekend

The original weekend was held in 1994, and has become an annual event held at the Eshowe Country Club.  The weekend is a three day event from 2.30pm on Thursday 18th till 3.00p.m.on Sunday 21st October 2007.    This is a non profit project, focused on conservation in and around the Eshowe area, and includes early morning guided birding in the surrounding forests of Ngoye, Dlinza and Entumeni.  A picnic lunch is supplied.

 These forests offer a host of species including Green barbet, Eastern bronze-naped pigeon, Orange ground thrush, Spotted ground thrush, Yellow-streaked greenbul, Brown scrub-robin, Green twinspot, Green malkoha, Narina trogon, White-eared barbet.   Hugh Chittenden author of the new “Roberts Bird Guide” presents an informative and interesting slide show each evening.   
The cost of the weekend includes guides, accommodation, food and transport to all birding spots by your hosts, as well as a season ticket valid for one year to the Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk.

Botanical Weekend

A botanical outing in KwaZulu Natal’s forest capital.  The weekend takes place simultaneously with the birding weekend above and will include presentation & slide shows by Sharon Louw and Gareth Chittenden of the surrounding area’s fantastic forests & grasslands.  A limited party of 10 will be guided on walks through diverse vegetation types.  Some specials for the weekend will include Olinia radiate (Natal Hard Pear), Alberta magna (Natal Flame Bush), Atalaya natalensis (Natal Krantz Ash) and Gonioma Kamassi (Kamassi).  Endemic plants such as Alchornea hirtella (Zulu Bead-string) and Streptocarpus wendlandii (Giant Streptocarpus) can be seen at Ngoye.  A range of wild flowers, from tiny sundews and rare epiphytic orchid species will not be missed on our guided walks.
